Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Let's find the best sound quality shows. I'll start.

With the continual influx of new uploads this is an important topic to revisit.

Many of the shows from the earlier eras can really thump on a nice system. The 73-74 SBDs, while not my favorite era, from the large master reals probably have cleaner bass and sound better in many respects to your average show from many other eras.

77 has some incredibly clean Betty boards but can be on the boxy side.
Spring 78 marks an incredibly beautiful pull. Fall 79, while these shows
came from cassette masters somehow the sound is so vibrant and thunderous. Not exacty sure why those boards sound so good. Anyone?
80-81 show a marked decline on the consistancy and availability of quality boards. No, phil was not playing lightly in that time period. There are some fine examples released recently from fall 81....11-29/30, 12-9,12-26 Some from pcm masters which I don't think we had seen previosly. Anyone?
82 marks a renaissance in quality, especially in how prevalent phil is in the mix. Shows like 7-31-82, 9-15-82, 9-21-82, and frost, of course.
83 there are a few sbd>PCM shows that surface late in the year- 10-21-83 and some
of the new years series.

With a good set of headphones all these shows come alive. With a little volume and the right show audiences can also carve a special place out for you too.

And this show just really does it for me in so many ways.
